According to the legend, it was discovered in 1830 on the birthday of Tsar Alexander II of Russia, so the stone was named "Alexandrite".
Alexandrite has a color-changing effect of green in sunlight and red in candlelight and incandescent lamps, and has been praised by many poets as "the emerald of the day and the ruby of the night".

[Color]
High-quality alexandrite variegates are green to blue-green in daylight and red to purplish-red in candlelight and incandescent light.
[Cause of color change]
Due to the trace amount of chromium in the color change stone, it is the most transmissive to green light, second to red light transmission, and strongly absorbs all other light. Therefore, in the daytime due to sunlight, so that the green light through the most, so it shows green, with the approximate white light of daylight illumination, change stone also shows blue. But at night, when rich in red light candles, oil lamps or tungsten incandescent lamps, the transmission of red light is particularly high, so it appears red. "This is how it got its name.
[Place of origin]
The main sources of Alexandrite are Sri Lanka, Burma, Russia, Zimbabwe, Brazil and other countries. The mineral deposits in the Ural Mountains of Russia have been almost depleted.
[Value]
Beautifully color-changing variegated stones are expensive, with high-quality variegated stones over one carat even more expensive than high-quality rubies, sapphires and emeralds of the same size.
The main factors affecting the price of a variegated stone are its color change, size, clarity and the number of flaws. Generally speaking, the more pronounced the color change, such as emerald green during the day and bright red at night, the higher the price. However, under normal circumstances, there are very few stones with such obvious color change effects, generally dark green during the day and reddish brown at night, i.e. green tourmaline during the day and garnet red at night.
Generally speaking, the price of variegated stones with large grains, high transparency and few imperfections is high. Internationally, the price of a good quality variegated stone can reach 1,000-5,000 dollars per carat.
